Welcome

Welcome to the Swiss Muscle Foundation The current and future possibilities of biotechnology require the establishment of organisations that represent and support the interests of individuals in our society. The Swiss Muscle Foundation represents the interests of people who are personally or in their family affected by congenital or acquired muscular diseases. The foundation is committed to improving the range of services available to those affected and to further research into muscle diseases. The establishment of the Swiss Muscle Foundation thus stems from a fundamental idea of the modern constitutional state.

MH App

Dr Henry Rosenberg (President of MHAUS) and Prof. Dr. Thierry Girard (Head of the Swiss MH Centre) have developed an application for iPhones and iPads that can be used to treat an acute intraoperative MH event. The interactive MH emergency algorithm guides you through an MH crisis and can calculate the dose of dantrolene and medication to treat hyperkalaemia and acidosis. In addition, all data and actions are logged.

Malignant Hyperthermia

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is an inherited predisposition. People who are predisposed to MH sensitivity react to certain anaesthetic drugs with a massively increased metabolism. The triggering drugs are inhaled anaesthetics and the muscle relaxant drug succinylcholine. If such a condition is not recognised quickly and treated correctly, it can lead to death. This is where the name ‘malignant hyperthermia’ comes from.

Predisposition

‘Malignant’ means “malignant” because the MH episode can lead to death, although this is relatively rare today.
‘Hyperthermia’ is the “rise in temperature” or fever, which can reach temperatures of over 42 degrees.

The predisposition to MH lies in the muscles. On contact with the triggering medication, the entire musculature is activated uncontrollably. This leads to an extreme increase in metabolism. This leads to a very strong increase in oxygen consumption and at the same time heat is produced by activating the muscles.

The more members our association has, the stronger we are and therefore, our ability to assert ourselves in order to speak for affected persons is bigger. Our goal is to efficiently inform the public about MH and create awareness. By means of this homepage we hope to make information more accessible for affected persons as well as anaesthetists.
